October 2007

Oct 5 I opened the back door & let the pups out this morning & then went back inside for my shoes, the leashes & pooper scooper bags. Our lab, of course, followed me. Our basset hound, Max, like a true hound, headed out on his own. When I got back outside I didn't see Max & by the time I got to the end of the driveway I could hear him picking through trash across the street. I ran in the direction of the rustling & boy was I shocked to see a big fat skunk a few yards in front of me! And then I spotted Max on the other side of the trash pile from the skunk. Oh my gosh! I panicked ... my lab was not yet on a leash & he'll chase ANYTHING that looks like a cat ... this was the 1st year in 5 he hadn't been sprayed by a skunk head on & I was worried this morning would change that. I got Napoleon on a leash ... phew ... and then stood back & watched. I never laughed so hard! The skunk went over to Max & sniffed him over. Max wasn't sure what to do, so he sniffed back & then tried to wander off. Well, the skunk decided to chase him. Max is pretty much a wimp & he got scared & started running down an alley with the skunk after him. I'm still laughing ... Max got far enough ahead of the skunk that he was able to turn around & watch the skunk go by him & then he ran for me. It was a lucky start to my day ... had that been Napoleon with the skunk I would be a VERY unhappy camper! SOLD
