I was out in the garden today & noticed our irises are starting to bud. I love, love, love irises! They are one of my favorite flowers ... along with daffodils, tulips, peonies, daisies, sunflowers, lilacs ... I guess I just love flowers. Anyways, I decided to post this painting I did awhile back of irises.

Nothing like some mild weather & a full moon to draw people out! We went to a potluck dinner on Saturday night & when we came out the full moon was shining bright over Portland & Casco Bay. We headed straight for the Eastern Prom to admire it on the water. WOW! So beautiful! And there were SOOOOOOO many people out. The Eastern Prom was littered with people & their cameras & cars--everyone stopping to admire the view. Ahhhh!

It was so damp & dreary last week ... 5 plus days of gray & rain. Sometimes I love a good rainy day to cozy in & get stuff done, but after awhile it kind of wears on your spirit. I definitely got caught up in the sogginess & decided to paint this misty, foggy afternoon scene. We are going back to Borestone Mountain this Fall & I can’t wait! As I finished up some work in my studio this afternoon, I started to daydream about this magical place, and the daydreaming turned to escaping there in the form of a painting. Today was a beautiful & deceiving day ... it was one of those days that looked so nice and warm, but it was downright chilly out with a wild wind! I’ll take it though--I love sunny days! I sat in my studio this afternoon & thought about those warmer days ahead & decided to paint this scene from Mackworth Island. It kind of reminds me of the French Mediterranean coast that some of my favorite painters like Renoir & Cezanne painted. I’m not sure if it’s the landscape or the palette that makes me think of them. What do you think?

I love Spring & it has been such a treat to experience a real Spring here in Maine. We often go from snow to mud to Summer & this year has been the kind of Spring I remember enjoying at home in Ohio as a kid ... warm days, cool nights, budding trees & flowers, birds chirping, grass green & soft. Ahhhh! And this bouquet of flowers says all of that too me. It was a gift from my friend Maggie & co-author of “Kids Gone RAW” an un-cookbook book we are writing together for kids. Spring appeared in full today! The grass turned green overnight, the flowering trees are blossoming and the green buds on the trees are starting to open up. It’s in the low 70s with bright sunshine and I couldn’t resist walking down to the prom , only 3 blocks from my front door, to paint my favorite view of Fort Gorges & Casco Bay. What a day! And yes, there was a sailboat in the bay. :-)

I just did a 3 day juice feast with a friend & this morning she sent me this gorgeous picture of the morning sun pouring in & lighting up her fresh pitcher of juice & all of the gorgeous produce on the counter. I have been surrounded by critters in every way imaginable ... I’ve got 4 of my own critters that cuddle, play and encourage me at home every day & I have had many from all over the country to inspire me in the studio over the past month. Spending time with animals, whether it be in real life or through digital images in the studio, is such a gift! I type this with one snoring boston terrier at my side & 2 purring pussycats at my other side. :-) Just feeling their presence is enough to put a smile on your face & joy in your heart with joy! This painting of the woods is inspired by my recent trip to Borestone Mountain where I went on a couple of early morning hikes to an overlook, hoping to spot a moose down below. I didn’t see a moose, but the sounds of the birds & the stillness of everything around me was breathtaking! I love peeking through the trees & out to Casco Bay from Mackworth Island. You can just make out Fort Gorges right in the center. Mackworth Island is such a remote escape & so close to the city. I love going for walks there!

I was back at Borestone Mountain last week & it was as magical as ever. I just love that place. I did this painting perched on the edge of the Peregrine Cliffs looking over to Borestone. The clouds were hanging low & floating over the summit of the mountain ... what a quiet & peaceful setting to paint in. :-)

I had a lot of fun painting this little painting this morning. Getting lost in the late afternoon sun hitting my neighborhood landmark, the Portland Observatory, was the perfect way to start my day. I tried to not get lost in too much detail & to just have a good time with the brush strokes.

I love this house on the Eastern Prom. It is so fun to look at, especially with the morning light hitting it! This is how it looked the morning after hurricane Irene ... so gorgeous & inviting. You’d never know that the rain was pounding & the winds were whistling like crazy the day before. I was at the Portland Sidewalk Sale on Saturday & I had a painting of just one of the upper corners of this house & to my surprise, a young woman came over, admired it & then pointed & said, “that is my bedroom.” So fun! Needless to say, she was meant to have that painting!

I was looking for a certain photo today & I happened upon this one of a little Vermont stream the runs next to the Birds of Vermont Museum in Huntington. I went there last Summer with my dad ... it’s a remarkable little museum that is home to many bird sculptures by 1 Vermont sculptor. This scene just grabbed me & I decided to get lost in a painting of it for a bit. It makes you want to wade in the cool mountain water, doesn’t it?

The Farmers’ Market is so inspiring--all of the fresh produce is absolutley beautiful & sooooooo delicious. I was feeling a little sleepy this morning & almost skipped out ... so glad I didn’t. I would have hated to miss out on these gorgeous red onions ... and the kale, chard, cukes, husk cherries, tomatoes, white onions & garlic that I cam home with. Can’t wait to whip up a husk cherry salsa ... that is if I don’t eat them all before I get chopping.

Last night we walked down to Fort Allen to hear the Thursday night Music in the park. The music was fun & lively & the evening was spectacular with the almost full moon up over Casco Bay. On the way home, I was really taken by the evening light surrounding the Front Room restaurant & Howard Street. So moody, so mysterious ... especially with the lamp post. I love painting lamp posts! :-)

We went to a beautiful wedding celebration at Broadturn Farm in Scarborough on Saturday & after the festivities, the bride & her mom sent us away with lots of flowers from the tables!!!!! Nothing makes me happier than having fresh flowers in the house ... I love them! And of course, I took advantage of them & sat outside in the backyard today to paint them. :-)
